Local favourites Avilash Mishra and Rutuparna Choudhury added one more feather to their caps by winning the boys’ and girls’ singles titles respectively in the KDTA-AITA Under-16 Talent Series Tennis Tournament here at Bhubaneswar Club courts on today.
In the all-Odisha finals, top seed Avilash thrashed his S S Tennis Academy partner Nishant Mohanty 6-1, 6-1, while second seed Rutuparna outplayed citymate Alisha Samal 6-2, 6-0. This was the 13th singles and 26th overall AITA title for Avilash, who is now occupying the 71st position in the under-16 National rankings. On the other hand, this was the fourth singles and ninth overall AITA crown for Rutuparna.
Earlier in boys’ semifinals, Avilash defeated statemate Aditya Satpathy 6-3, 6-3 and second seed Nishant drubbed Dhananjai Govind (WB) 6-0, 6-1. In the girls’ last-four round, Rutuparna got the better of city-mate Anaam Almas 6-3, 6-3, while third seed Alisha eliminated top seed Anushka Burman (WB) 6-4, 6-4.
Additional Police DG Pranabindu Acharya handed over the trophies at the closing function. Host Khurda District Tennis Association (KDTA) president Madhusudan Padhi and secretary Asit Pradhan were present on the occasion.
The closing ceremony of the Talent Series Tournament coincided with inauguration of the Major Sandeep Memorial 8th Odisha Open Tennis Tournament, featuring competition in men’s singles, men’s open doubles, mixed doubles, seniors 40+, 50+ and 60+ doubles categories.
